Master Naturalist to Speak at Roland Park Community Center
Alison Milligan, a Maryland master naturalist and professional native species landscaper, will talk about “Why and How to Create a ‘Homegrown National Park’ at Home or in your Community.”
The event will be held at the Roland Park Community Center, 5802 Roland Avenue in Baltimore. It is organized by Native Species Revival, a local nonprofit, and will bring together local professional landscapers, master gardeners, nursery owners and homeowners to the cause of increasing biodiversity in central Maryland.
“This event will take a great step towards raising the public’s consciousness of healing the Earth and developing a more caring relationship with our natural environment,” said Gregg Jones, head of the event’s organizing committee. “We hope this event will empower property owners to participate in the ‘homegrown national park’ vision, so that they can steward the land, increasing biodiversity by planting more native species. These species provide habitat and food for pollinators and birds whose populations are at risk.”
Milligan, a master gardener and watershed steward, will demonstrate how to solve common landscaping problems while protecting the watershed, restoring biodiversity, and adding value to your home. Using readily available native plants, she will share examples of simple and easy ways to create diverse habitats in large and small yards. Her photographic images of plants and animals illustrate the beauty of native flora and fauna that you can attract to your own home. Choosing native plants makes a difference to the environment, gives food and shelter to valuable wild species, and brings beauty to the world.
