Postcards from Camp: Sam R., Camp Airy

This is my second summer at Camp Airy. I’ve tried many activities and there are a few that I like best, and they all are in the extreme sports or outdoors departments or are part of Olympics.

My favorites are Go Karts and Skate Park. This year, I was tall enough to drive a go kart around the track. I like getting up to a good speed and then coasting around turns. The first time I drove, I drove one of my bunkmates. We both had a good time. So, then, I drove another bunkmate around the track, too. It’s fun to go fast and pass a lot of people on the track. I hope next year I can drive the go karts again.

I also enjoy the Skate Park. At the Skate Park, we can try skateboards or scooters but I prefer the skateboard. I’m still learning how to ride a skateboard, but I wear pads and a helmet so I know I won’t get hurt. I have fun going over the small ramp and hopefully next summer I will be able to drop from a larger ramp.

Because I am a fan of the outdoors, I signed up for special activities like “cool camping.” I learned survival skills like building a shelter and starting a fire with flint and steel. In outdoor cooking, we made pancakes and Navajo donuts. I also enjoyed my bunk’s morning campout in the woods. I almost caught a crayfish when we went crayfishing! We got to make teriyaki stir fry over an open fire.

I also really enjoyed Olympics even though the white team lost. I participated in four all-star games: basketball, knock out, baseball and dodgeball. I also was part of the tug of war.

These are just some of many favorite activities at camp. I’m going home in a few days, but I’m looking forward to next year to do it all over again and get to do what I couldn’t this year like the Mega Zip, an overnight camp out, scissors tower and copper enameling.
