Sixth Grade, Krieger Schechter Day School of Chizuk Amuno Congregation
For Chanukah, Krieger Schechter Day School sponsored 36 families unable to afford to celebrate the holiday. The effort was part of the 36 days of celebration commemorating KSDS’s 36th year of service to the Northwest Baltimore community.
According to Liz Minkin-Friedman, KSDS’s director of development and strategic advancement, “Schechter’s 36-year anniversary is about many things. For one thing, it is about celebrating the values about which Schechter cares.”
The school collected items such as clothes, toys, books and money to meet families’ needs. Minkin-Friedman said that parents, grandparents, alumni parents, faculty, alumni faculty and board members participated as another meaningful way to mark the school’s 36th anniversary.
“These people got together to decide how they wanted to celebrate our 36th anniversary,” she said. “One of the members said it would it be great to sponsor 36 families in our community around the holidays. It was just one of the team member’s ideas, and we ran with it. Everyone was very excited about it, so we moved forward.”
KSDS partnered with Jewish Volunteer Connections to identify the families, both Jewish and non-Jewish, to spread the Chanukah spirit. The school, which continually works to help the community, has raised its efforts during its 36th anniversary year.
