Fall Arts 2022: Listings

Pierre Bensusan performs at Creative Alliance on Nov. 9.; The State Ballet Theatre of Ukraine Presentation of Swan Lake will take place on Nov. 5 at the Hippodrome; “Tina: The Tina Turner Musical” comes to the Hippodrome from Nov. 15-Nov.20.

VISUAL ARTS

“EX-tend EX-cess: Metamorphosis in Clay”

This new exhibition co-curated by Jewish artists Sagi Refael and J. Susan Isaacs — and including the work of several nationally recognized Jewish and Israeli ceramic artists — explores themes of transformation. Throughout the fall, the university will host several exhibition-related lectures, including one by Baltimore Jewish artist Zemer Peled with a musical introduction by her brother, cellist Amit Peled, on Dec. 1.

“Movement in Every Direction: Legacies of the Great Migration”

Between 1915 and 1970 more than 6 million African Americans left the South and settled in other parts of the United States. This “Great Migration” had a tremendous impact on Black life and culture still felt today. “Movement in Every Direction” explores the impact through newly commissioned works of 12 Black artists, including Akea Brione Brown, Mark Bradford, Zoë Charlton, Larry W. Cook, Torkwase Dyson, Theaster Gates Jr., Allison Janae Hamilton, Leslie Hewitt, Steffani Jemison, Robert Pruitt, Jamea Richmond-Edwards and Carrie Mae Weems.

“Coming Attractions: The John Waters Collection”

The BMA will showcase approximately 90 works from the collection of filmmaker John Waters, providing an insider’s look at the Baltimore icon’s tastes in fine art. The artworks are drawn from the 372 objects Waters gave to the museum as part of his bequest. The exhibition will be guest-curated by photographer Catherine Opie and artist Jack Pierson, friends of Waters whose works are represented in his collection. Among the featured works will be paintings, sculptures, photographs and prints by Diane Arbus, Cindy Sherman, Andy Warhol and others.

“Our Town”

There’s no one like her. “Tina” tells the incredible tale of the soul singer’s inspiring and incredible comeback, and her rise to fame and fortune in the face of tremendous obstacles. Described by the Los Angeles Times as “one of the most unique and brilliant acoustic guitar veterans in the world music scene today,” French-Algerian Jewish acoustic guitarist, singer and composer Pierre Bensusan is hard to characterize. He finds inspiration in diverse genres such as Celtic, folk, world music, new age and chamber jazz and performs exclusively in what guitarists call DADGAD tuning. Music director laureate Marin Alsop retired from her role as artistic director of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra last fall, but that doesn’t mean she’s gone for good. In this incredible program, Alsop directs violinist Augustin Hadelich and the BSO as they perform Still’s “In Memoriam: The Colored Soldiers Who Died for Democracy,” Shostakovich’s Violin Concerto No. 1 and Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony.
