Meet some of Charm City’s premier business and professional leaders, coming from the worlds of academia, business, medical, food service and philanthropy.

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, 31.1% of adults experience an anxiety disorder at some time in their lives. And, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recently recommended that youth ages 8 and up be screened for anxiety.

“If you don’t get it early, and you don’t get to treat it early, it’s very likely to develop into an adult anxiety disorder,” says Jon Hershfield, MFT, director of The Center for OCD and Anxiety, Sheppard Pratt’s outpatient treatment center for individuals with obsessive-compulsive and anxiety-related disorders. “These disorders keep people from working. They keep people from forming relationships, and they take a lot out of your life.”

Hershfield, author of several OCD self-help books and a nationally renowned speaker on OCD, founded the OCD and Anxiety Center of Greater Baltimore, which joined Sheppard Pratt in 2020. Hershfield dedicated his efforts to growing The Center for OCD and Anxiety to fill the region’s OCD treatment gaps. As part of his efforts, he leads OCD programming at The Retreat, Sheppard Pratt’s specialty residential treatment program for adults, and the newly- developed LifeLaunch, which provides residential services for teens with anxiety, depression and related diagnoses. Both programs offer effective, personalized treatment in the forms of cognitive behavioral therapy and exposure with response prevention to supplement psychiatry; holistic wellness; and individual, family and group therapies.

“It is highly underestimated how many people are out there struggling with mental health conditions, particularly OCD and anxiety-based disorders that are treatable with the right care,” Hershfield explains. “By increasing the levels of care that we offer at Sheppard Pratt, we can help more people and encourage others to ask for help.”
