Local Jewish community leader and philanthropist Michelle “Shelly” Chyatte Malis passed away on Monday, Sept. 16. The Lutherville resident was 65.
Malis was a former president of Pikesville’s Chizuk Amuno Congregation and former chair of the Women’s Campaign of The Associated: Jewish Federation of Baltimore.
She also served as the head of Associated Women’s Dignity Grows, an initiative that provides free menstrual and comprehensive hygiene necessities for those in need.
In addition, she was an alumnae mentor and member of the board of directors at Sisters Circle, a group that connects women and girls in the Baltimore area, as well as a board member of Art with a Heart and co-chair of the Baltimore-Ashkelon Partnership.
In 2023, Malis was among the recipients of the E.B. Hirsh Lifetime Achievement Award presented by the Federation of Jewish Women’s Organizations of Maryland.
“Shelly was a passionate leader in many charitable organizations and still had time to be an amazing wife, mother, grandmother and friend,” wrote her family on the Sol Levinson & Bros. funeral home website. “She will be deeply missed.”
She is survived by her husband, Ira Malis; her children, Abigail (Alexander) Malischostak and Matt Malis (Catherine Brizo Saravia); her siblings, Gerri Geraci, Scott (Judy) Chyatte, Brett (BeverlyAnn) Chyatte; her grandchildren, Rose Nessa Malischostak and Ezra Zoltan Malischostak; her brother-in-law, Andy (Elizabeth) Malis; and her mother, Helen Underwood. She was predeceased by her beloved father, Samuel Chyatte.
Funeral services will be held at Sol Levinson’s Chapel, 8900 Reisterstown Road in Pikesville, on Wednesday, Sept. 18, at 3:30 pm. Interment will be at Garrison Forest Cemetery of Chizuk Amuno Congregation, 11501 Garrison Forest Road in Owings Mills.

The family will be in mourning at 11615 Woodland Drive in Lutherville immediately following interment on Wednesday with a service at 7:30 p.m., on Thursday from 1-5 p.m. with a service at 7, and on Friday with a service at 8:30 a.m. and receiving until 4 p.m.
