A retired veteran educator and former principal in the Baltimore County Public Schools system, Judith May Schwartz passed away on Monday, Nov. 10.

The Towson resident and longtime member of Beth El Congregation’s sisterhood was 86.

“The Officers, Board of Trustees and Staff of Beth El Congregation express a deep sense of loss on the passing of our member, Judith Schwartz,” posted the Pikesville synagogue. “May her memory be for a blessing.”

In 1961, Schwartz began her 40-year teaching career at Hebbville Elementary School in the Windsor Mill area. In 1976, she was named assistant principal at Winands Elementary School in Pikesville.

Seven years later, Schwartz became principal at Milbrook Elementary School in Northwest Baltimore. In 1992, she became principal at Lutherville Elementary School, where she served for nine years.

“A dedicated educator … Judy’s impact on her students and community were immeasurable,” her family wrote on the website of Sol Levinson & Bros. “Judy had a special knack for making learning fun, and her love for the Baltimore Orioles was infectious. She often took her students to games, sharing her passion for baseball with the next generation.”

In addition to baseball, Schwartz enjoyed a love for traveling. Among the places she visited were Russia, China and throughout Europe.

“She was known for her unique and extensive collections of travel t-shirts and boutique shopping bags, each one a memory of a journey. A very sharp dresser, Judy truly had a style of her own,” her family wrote.

Judith Schwartz is survived by her niece, Barbara (Tom) Finn; her nephews, Craig (Carmen) Schwartz and Howard Schwartz; and her sister-in-law, Linda Schwartz.

She was predeceased by her siblings, Gordon Schwartz and Harriet Reed.
