The James Beard Foundation Awards are the American food industry’s equivalent of the Oscars, and among this year’s big winners was Chevy Chase resident Pati Jinich.

A native of Mexico City born to a Jewish family, Jinich is the host of the Emmy Award-nominated PBS show “Pati’s Mexican Table,” and an occasional food column contributor to Jmore. She is also a cookbook author, educator and food writer

At the Beard Media Awards conference held last weekend at Columbia College Chicago, the second season of the PBS special series “La Frontera with Pati Jinich” won in the Docuseries Visual Media category. The show explores the cuisine and culture of America’s border with Mexico.

The James Beard Foundation Awards ceremony was held at the Lyric Opera of Chicago, attracting some of the nation’s premier chefs, bakers, restaurateurs and beverage professionals.

In a social media post, the 52-year-old Jinich — who has won three Beard Awards in previous years — wrote, “This is such an honor!!! … This award is for the 31 million people who live in the US/Mexico borderland communities. Thank you for sharing your stories with us! …

“To our dear friends who opened their doors and their homes to us, if only just for a little bit, we hope we did your stories some justice.”
