New Under the Sun
It’s indisputable: Prolonged exposure to the harmful rays of the sun damages skin, causing premature aging and increasing your likelihood of developing skin cancer. Yet many of us just don’t feel like it’s summertime without sporting a sun-kissed glow. No worries. Jmore beauty expert Ariel Lewis answers the most common questions about getting your glow on without risking your health.
Aside from protecting skin, are there other benefits to self-tanning and spray tans?
Yes! They work quickly, in as little as 20 minutes. Plus, many formulas have conditioners that hydrate and nourish the skin.
Spray-tan or machine-tan?
Spray-tans are preferable. Machine-tans use hose and nozzle application methods that can’t possibly give you the natural, even-looking tans that can be gotten when a good product is applied by hand.
Are all tanning formulas the same?
No! A lot of tanning formulas contain DHA (dihydroxyacetone), a chemical known to react with dead cells on the skin’s surface to temporarily change skin color. When skin peels, the tan disappears. Tanning products with DHA, often used in machine tanning, give skin a yellow or orange hue that you want to avoid. Instead, opt for organic and vegan formulas. They are safe, walnut-based and give your skin a natural, brown color.
Tips for self-tanning product application?
- Apply a test patch to your upper back thigh, where no one will see it, to make sure the color blends naturally with your skin tone
- Be mindful when applying product to areas such as elbows and knees as they tend to be drier and absorb more product
- Use lemon juice and apple cider vinegar to remove any splotchy areas
- When applying product, always wear gloves or a tanning mitt
- Remember: self-tanning products don’t typically provide UV protection! Always protect your skin with a high SPF sunscreen
What if you’re not a spray-tanning fan?
Go with the many excellent self-tanning gels, lotions and cream bronzers on the market. Some of my favorites? The Organic Pharmacy Self Tan (dermstore.com); L’Oréal Sublime bronzer (Target); Fake Bake Flawless Self Tan Liquid (Ulta).
