The Board of Governors of The Associated: Jewish Federation of Baltimore announced Sept. 8 that Andrew Cushnir, executive vice president and chief development officer of the Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles, was hired to become the seventh president of the 103-year-old organization.

He will join The Associated next April.

Cushnir will succeed Marc B. Terrill, who has served as the professional leader of The Associated since 2003 . Last September, Terrill, 62, announced he planned to step down in June of 2024.

“I have been fortunate to be President of the Associated for over 20 years and connected to the organization in various capacities for over 30 years,” Terrill said when announcing his departure from the federation. “Even though my role will eventually change, my love for this community will never end and, for the next two years, I am looking forward to continuing our work. There is a still a lot of work to be done.”

Over the past year, The Associated conducted a national search for Terrill’s successor. The executive search committee was chaired by Yehuda Neuberger, The Associated’s chair of the board of directors. Serving as vice chairs on the committee were Linda A. Hurwitz and Benjamin K. Greenwald, both of whom are former board chairs.

“I am deeply honored to be chosen to lead The Associated at this pivotal time in its history,” said Cushnir, 59, a Los Angeles native, in a statement. “The Baltimore community is known throughout the world for its generosity and warmth, its remarkable leadership and an operating structure that gives rise to innovation and collaboration. I look forward to working with the many volunteer and professional leaders who make this community so special to ensure the continued vibrancy of the Baltimore Jewish community.”

In his role at the Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles, Cushnir has led the organization’s efforts to raise funds through its annual campaign, strategic philanthropy priority projects, and planned giving. He came to the Los Angeles federation in January of 2004.

Associated President Marc B. Terrill has led the federation since 2003.

Cushnir previously served as the federation’s chief program officer, overseeing all programmatic and partnership activities in Los Angeles, Israel and internationally. He was also the federation’s director of business divisions and new business initiatives, and led the community relations and social services teams and the Planning & Allocations Department.

Before entering the Jewish communal field, Cushnir practiced law at Manatt, Phelps & Phillips LLP and SunAmerica Inc. A graduate of the University of California, Los Angeles, he received his law degree from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law, in San Francisco.

“Andrew brings a wealth of experience and a deep commitment to The Associated’s mission, making him the ideal leader to guide the organization into a second century of growth and impact in Baltimore and beyond,” the federation wrote in a statement. “The board was impressed by Andrew’s background, leadership skills and vision for the future. Marc Terrill will continue to support the organization during the transition.”

Said Terrill in the statement: “It has been my honor to serve The Associated and the Baltimore community. Now as I move onto my next chapter, I am excited to pass the torch to Andrew, a leader with remarkable qualities and a longstanding commitment to the Jewish people and making the world a better place. I have no doubt he will feel as energized by the position as I have for the past 20-plus years.”

Yehuda Neuberger characterized the board as “thrilled that Andrew will join our team and lead The Associated into the future. His passion for Jewish life and identity, his vast experience in a large Federation and his commitment to excellence make him the ideal choice for this new role.“
