On the second-to-last day of Chanukah, the Festival of Freedom, Baltimore Hebrew Congregation will recommit itself to the right to express itself and its support for the State of Israel.
At a ceremony at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 14, BHC — located at 7401 Park Heights Avenue — announced it will replace a pair of outdoor signs that were vandalized and destroyed last weekend.
The signs — located on BHC’s campus and near the corner of Park Heights and Slade avenues — proclaimed the synagogue’s solidarity with Israel at this time and the congregation’s advocacy for bringing home the remaining Israeli hostages abducted by Hamas terrorists during the Oct. 7 attack.

In a statement, BHC’s Rabbis Andrew Busch and Elissa Sachs-Kohen said, “Our focus is on the messages of our signs: ‘We Stand with the People of Israel’ and ‘Bring the Hostages Home,’ not having lengthy speeches, in hopes to keep the program short, only 20 or 30 minutes total. The signs were shredded by someone overnight Sunday to Monday.
“We appreciate the quick response of Baltimore County Police, many rabbis, elected officials, and the Baltimore Jewish Council. Please join us as we restore our signs, express our synagogue’s right to express ourselves on our property, and embrace the message of our signs.”
In a statement shortly after the vandalism, the congregation said, “We believe that most people who disagree with the message of our signs wouldn’t impinge on the freedom to place signs on our property.”
